World Book Day

On Friday 3rd March, international award-winning author Mark Lowery will be visiting our school to deliver creative writing workshops.  He will also give a talk about the important things in life, like reading, writing… and doughnuts!

Mark will be signing copies of his books, including the Roman Garstang series (The Jam Doughnut That Ruined My Life and five others), and his latest novels, Charlie and Me and Eating Chips with Monkey. The books cost £6 each or £10 for two (£5 each for all additional books). If you’d like to make a purchase, your child should bring either cash or a cheque in a named envelope on the day (cheques made payable to “FOOTNOTE BOOKS LTD”).  Otherwise, Mark will be in the library after school and you will be able to see him then. Payments after school can also be taken by card.

  **********************************************

Children will be invited to dress up as book characters and may remain in costume throughout the day (please be mindful of comfort when creating costumes and props). If any inspiration is needed, ideas for simple costumes can be found on Google Classroom.

We are also excited to share that children’s author, Mark Lowery, will be visiting West Drayton Academy in person, to host an assembly and workshops across Key Stage 1 and 2. See below for more information. There will also be virtual author sessions hosted throughout the week, such as video workshops with Julia Donaldson and Michael Morpurgo. Additionally, on March 3rd, children are encouraged to bring their favourite book to school, as there will be opportunity to read with children from other year groups.

Finally, we are holding two competitions for all year groups to enter. Our first competition encourages children to use their wildest imaginations to create a brand new cover design for their favourite book! Secondly, to interest budding writers, we are setting the challenge to write a story, poem or joke using only six words. Designs and written pieces should be named and returned to Miss Richardson by Friday 3rd March, when one winner from each year group will be chosen. More information can be found on Google Classroom.

We eagerly anticipate seeing the children's creations and celebrating love of reading across the school.
